The most respected leaders in the business world are those who head up corporations with a vision. That vision is a direct result of the leader’s ability to be a visionary. Any leader who fails to do this is destined to ride that company right into the ground. The business world today changes too quickly for businesses to have a passive approach. The C-Level executives must provide their organizations with a vision for the future.

I once was associated with an enterprise that was run by a gentleman who came from the operation’s side of the business. Over the years he ascended to the top of the organizational chart. His years spent in operations made him exceptional at handling any issues. Anything that arose he was able to take care of. It almost seemed that he was not comfortable unless there was some problem to be attacked. He could juggle 3 or 4 fires simultaneously. Looking back, I am still amazed at this individual’s skill in this area.

However, being the leader of a corporation of this size required a different type of person. As terrific as he was at handling issues, he was equally as poor at creating a vision for the future. This company suffered from a corporate culture that was old and tired. Morale was low which affected productivity. Department heads all had twenty plus years with the organization yet their attitudes were horrific. Nonetheless, years went by before all of this was exposed. This company experienced significant growth for more than a decade using an antiquated vision. Training and technology were not heavily promoted. Ironically, this company operated in a high tech industry. As you can imagine, the exposure came when the economy made a dramatic shift. All the weaknesses were highly magnified. The flaws of the old system showed how ineffective the entire company was. Sales were reduced to levels not seen in almost two decades.

Where did this leader go wrong? To begin with, he broke the first rule of running a company: don’t work in the business, work on the business. All his time was spent attending to matters within the course of the business. There was nobody working on the business. Instead of spending a large portion of his time developing strategies, the day was filled handling one detail after another. Secondly, since the focus was within, a major shift in the marketplace was missed. Naturally, this is not the first executive to fall prey to this. Yet, companies today need leaders who are willing to look out into the future and see what things will look like 5 or 10 years from now. Warren Buffet does this before he buys a company. He figures out where the market will be, not where it is presently.

Being a visionary is something that the business world is looking for. As mentioned, the world of business changes too rapidly. With globalization comes a completely new set of rules. Agility is the key factor. The dinosaurs of the past are being gobbled up almost daily. Take the furniture industry as an example. For decades, the largest manufacturers of furniture we located in North Carolina. However, 10 years ago started the shift in production to China. Today, because of the lower cost of labor, most of the furniture sold in this country is made overseas. A visionary leader would notice something like this. Someone who is spending his or her time working in the business is apt to miss it.

If you are in a leadership position, be a visionary. Determine where you want your organization to be 5, 10, and 20 years down the road. What will your corporate culture look like? Are the people in place to make that happen? Are there factors that could cause a major shift in your industry? What are they? How does technology affect your business? Can it be used to give you a competitive advantage? Is the attitude one that will move your organization to the next level? Finally, what skills do you need to acquire to be able to run a corporation that you are creating? It is important that your abilities go at a rate faster than your company.

We have interviewed several women leaders to understand what women leadership can contribute to the business world. We introduce our first Women Leader in our series – Esi Kpeglo, HR Business Partner, National Archives:

We asked Esi, ‘What Challenges have you had being a women leader?’

Esi said, ‘Having a voice and being believed and heard is the key. Plus being black has meant that people have a view and everything is framed around that view. I feel in some ways, that I haven’t been allowed to do things because of people’s cultural perceptions of me.

There are more women in HR than men but there are more male HR Directors than women and statistics show that men get to HR Director positions quicker in their careers than women. Maybe men take more risks in their careers and go for roles that are ?20k-?30K increases, whereas I may have taken smaller steps up the leadership ladder.

Other challenges I have faced as a woman leader are based on my own belief system and whether or not I believe I can do it. I think this is my conditioning. Both my parents believed women could do what they wanted. My paternal grandmother in Ghana went to school in the late 1800s and her mother did too. This was extremely unusual. So I come from a family that values education and has given me a chance.’

We also wanted to know what Esi believed women leaders bring to an organisation. Esi responded by saying ‘a balance’, she said ‘I can be incredibly tough if need be but it’s also known that I can be extremely fair too as I think that is very important. I’m not going to go in guns blazing because that’s not my style.

I’m not duplicitous. Maybe the men will play overtly political games more, whether it’s me or if it’s because I’m a woman I don’t know, but I like to be honest in all I do and do not “double speak”.

Esi wondered if women multitasked better, or deliver more? She then stated that many women leaders have a different way of looking at a problem and maybe their way is more holistic rather than one- dimensional. She observed, ‘women generally know that people are far more complex and multi-dimensional too. I’m generalising here, but women tend to be less selfish. Of course there are women I know who will happily stab people in the back but I think men behave this way more often. However, when a woman does behave this way it can be more dangerous and extreme in my opinion.’

There are several ways to produce customers, some paid, some free

There are several  ways to produce  customers, some paid, some free. Needless to say, I favor using free methods although some people might have a different taste.

I deliberately love the feeling of seeing a salary coming in and knowing that 99.99% of the total amount of that compensation is pure profit.

So maybe I do not get 10,000 visits per day to my website, but each on I get is 100% free so I probably make more money than many PPC users who at the end of the day have to give up a big chunk of their cash flow to Google AdWords.

But let us focus on the main issue I want to discuss in this article: what is the best way to build and  develope a stream of customers… for no cost.

I know that you have probably heard about different theories and strategies designed to achieve free transactions, from social bookmarking to blog commenting etc, however, although numerous of the usually recognized no cost methods do offer a certain level of effectiveness, there is only one that can truly become both a huge short term and a long term source of customers.

This often underestimated method is no other than article selling, and I would say it is not only underestimated it is also underused because bountiful people discard it because they tend to think that developing customers,  through article selling is too hard, and they fail to realize a couple of important details:

1.- Article advertising provides you with the highest quality transactions,  money can buy, only you are getting it for free.

Indeed, think for a minute the level of conversions you can reach from a visitor driven to your site from an article. This is a person who already spent a few minutes reading your article and then he or she clicked through, meaning that up to some point he or she greatly agrees with you.

This level of predisposition can hardly be achieved through a two line ad, where the visitors often clicks through just out of curiosity and each time they do your bank account is getting hammered.

What this means is that you need a lot less article traffic than you need other sort of communications in order to get the same number of conversions.

2.- Article marketing provides you with quality one way links to your site, which is the foundation of a higher rank in the search engines and ultimately a great source of free targeted traffic.

3.- All these effects are permanent, so the more you do, the more you will get both instantly and over time.

Now, certainly if you were to pursue the benefits of article marketing by writing 20 articles a day with the goal of building a stream of transactions and 700 on way links within the year, I would certainly agree… this is too much work.

But, if you do the same by writing just one article per day, but submitting that article to 200 directories, then you would be creating around 7,000 independent sources of traffic to your site plus an equal number of one way links that would in turn help you suck a great deal of natural traffic from the search engines. Then you can really sit back and enjoy a real avalanche of transactions with just a little work.

In order to do this however, you cannot go submitting your articles to each directory on by one, because you will be 1 month older by the time you are finished submitting just one article.

Rather you should use an article submission software that can do this mechanical and painstaking job for you in one click, and save a ton of time and profit while you get the best of both worlds: massive immediate communications and one way links to your site.
